Great BBQ and Mr. Baillie go hand-in-hand here in Marion County, which is why it just made sense to name the Southeastern Youth Fair BBQ Contest after Mr. Baillie when it began 17 years ago. Mr. Baillie was a retired County Agent and was well known for his support of the youth of Marion County. There are four different classes in the contest: Beef, Pork, Poultry, and Other. Each contestant has a 2.5-hour time limit to prepare the finished entrée. They are judged on appearance and cleanliness of the cook, timing, skill in starting and controlling the fire, skill in barbecuing, sanitation and cleanliness, quality of the finished dish, cleanup of the area, and their recipe. You won’t want to miss the creativity and skill displayed by these young people!
What can my contestant cook?
There are four classes to choose to participate in:
Beef, Pork, Poultry, or “Other”… so the sky is the limit!
How much does it cost? $2 entry fee
Is my child eligible to participate? Any student 8 years of age and up, who is a member of a 4H club or FFA chapter, who lives in Marion County or attends a Marion County school may participate.
See our “Rules” for any other questions!
